Have you heard how Clarkson University is spending YOUR tuition money? Dear Clarkson University Parent: You can be proud you’re sending your child to a world-class University like Clarkson. We should know -- we’re Clarkson’s Facilities and Services workers who proudly maintain and clean our campus to keep it operating every day for our students. What you might not be proud of is how Clarkson University is currently spending your tuition dollars to fight against us. They’re paying a notoriously anti-union law firm more than $400 an hour to stop us from gaining a fair wage increase and to try and bust our union.
We’re already among the lowest-paid campus workers, with an average salary of $23,400 a year. We proposed a 3% wage increase, which we feel is not only reasonable, but affordable and fair, especially given the University’s $128,501,883 endowment (source: U.S. News & World Report). Our proposal costs about $40,000 more than the University’s offer. Considering this is just about equal to one student’s annual tuition, room and board, our proposal would have a miniscule impact on the University’s budget (and your tuition costs), but the University says they’re unwilling to offer us even a penny more. For some reason, they’ll still keep throwing more of your money at the union-busting lawyers to fight us. (Read more about the University's apparent labor relations values.) We’re not asking for riches, just to keep up with costs of living. But this isn’t about money anymore, it’s about fairness and respect. We’ve already gotten support from our students, but if we’re going to make progress, we need the support of parents like you. To show yours, please register here with your support, and send a letter to Clarkson University President Anthony Collins. With your help, we can stop this unfair treatment, and teach a valuable lesson to our students that our hard work matters. We appreciate your support as we fight for fairness.
